A suit is instituted when the plaint is presented (s.3 Explanation).

Postponed start of time: death (s.17) and fraud (s.18)

Use if the person died before the right accrued.

Fraud against the person guilty of it, or anyone claiming through them other than in good faith for value.

Fresh period: acknowledgment and payment (ss.19–20)

Only entries made before the period expired count. Acknowledgments must be in writing signed by the liable party or authorised agent; part-payments must be acknowledged in the payer’s handwriting or a signed writing.

Time excluded (ss.12–16)
Legal disability (ss.6–8) and continuing wrongs (s.23)
Court closure (s.4)

If the last day falls when the court is closed, the deadline moves to the day it reopens.
